Young classical vocalist Khyati Kumar appeared on Radio Dhoom’s Guest of the Day, where she spoke with RJ Raghav about her musical training, performances, hobbies and future aspirations.

Radio Dhoom host RJ Raghav interviewed young classical vocalist Khyati Kumar for the popular programme Guest of the Day. During the engaging studio conversation, Khyati spoke about her training in Indian classical music, her artistic interests, performances and future aspirations.

Khyati revealed that, apart from music, she has a keen interest in drawing, painting and pencil sketching. She said she enjoys creating sketches and can also prepare portraits by observing photographs.

Speaking about her musical education, Khyati said she has been learning Indian classical music for around five years and has studied nearly 202 ragas. She identified Raag Darbari Kanada as her favourite and explained its basic structure, including its ascending and descending notes, as well as the concepts of vadi and samvadi swaras.

During the interview, she also presented a short classical composition, Pratham Jyoti Jwala, based on Raag Darbari and set to Ektaal. Her performance was appreciated by RJ Raghav, who praised her confidence and command over classical music.

Khyati shared that she began playing the harmonium at the age of 10 and took nearly three years to become comfortable with the instrument. She explained that regular practice has helped her identify musical notes by listening to a song and reproduce them on the harmonium.

Although she does not play the tabla, Khyati has basic knowledge of rhythmic cycles such as Teentaal and Ektaal. She also expressed her desire to learn the flute. Her father, who can play the flute to some extent, has inspired her to begin learning the instrument before pursuing professional training.

Khyati described her father as her role model and also named renowned playback singer Shreya Ghoshal as one of her musical inspirations. She said she particularly admires Shreya Ghoshal’s ability to express emotions through her singing.

She is receiving classical music training at Chakradhar Sangeet Mahavidyalaya, Raigarh in Chhattisgarh under the guidance of her guru, Chandra Devangan. Khyati also spoke about her one-hour performance at the India ESG Summit in Raipur, where she presented several ragas to introduce the audience to different forms of Indian classical music.

She further recalled participating in the 2023 Chakradhar Samaroh, where she performed Chhattisgarh’s state song as part of a group presentation. Khyati has also participated in youth festivals and reached the block-level stage. She was honoured at the India ESG Summit for her musical performance.

Discussing competitions, Khyati said that Indian classical singers are comparatively fewer in her region, though every performance requires preparation, discipline and confidence. She added that ragas may share similar notes but differ in their presentation, mood, timing, thaat, and emphasis on particular swaras.

Khyati expressed happiness at being invited to Radio Dhoom and described the interview as an important platform for an emerging artist. Though she considers herself reserved, she said the friendly atmosphere encouraged her to speak openly about her journey.

Concluding the interview, RJ Raghav appreciated Khyati’s dedication and especially praised her desire to teach music to others in the future. He wished her continued success in music and in every field she chooses to pursue.

The interview offered listeners an inspiring glimpse into the journey of a young artist who is steadily developing her talent through disciplined training, creativity and a deep love for Indian classical music.

Her diverse taste in music further showcased her depth and understanding of the art form.
